President Bill Burch's

Liberian Project

President Bill Burch launched the Liberian Project for his Presidents Project 2009-10. La Jolla Rotary’s Liberian Project will provide micro-credit loans and education to widows in Liberia. Since their husbands died in civil war, the very small coffee farms lie dormant. This training and financing will enable women to revive small businesses which will sustain their families and rebuild their communities. Micro-credit loans have a 96% repayment rate, as the borrowers are held accountable by their friends who are also participating in the program.

Money for the project was raised thru private contributions and fund raiser that involved donating $50.00 for a bag of Micro Credit coffee. Most Rotarians in the club were more than happy to help with this worthwhile humanitarian cause. More than $22,000 was quickly raised, making the project a reality by years end. Extra funds will then help this same Liberian community with well water and sanitation. They currently have to walk miles every day for their fresh water; and sanitation is lacking. Your contribution will help these women bring civilization back to their community.

Our club worked with the Foundation for Women’s Deborah Lindholm to ensure the money would be delivered safely and a proper micro-credit loan put into place.

“Welcome to La Jolla Rotary – making a meaningful difference in people’s lives, in the community, and in the world. On this website, you’ll learn more about our many avenues of service. If you’d like to know more about our fine club, please give us a call, or stop by our weekly luncheon on Tuesdays at La Valencia.”
