Rotary Club of La Jolla
2009 - 2010
President's Letter

Dear Rotarians,

Thank you for allowing me the honor of serving through Rotary this year. I step into this role after 15 years of membership in this wonderful club. From the day of my first introduction, I saw the special place that is La Jolla Rotary - the wonderful people, the talented leadership, and the meaningful works.

In fact, I've made that word - meaningful - the core of my service this year. Our theme for the year is "Make it Meaningful". As a service club - and one with remarkable talent, enthusiasm, and resources - we make a difference in the community and the world. Let us look at everything we do, and every dollar we spend to ensure that it is meaningful.

To me, "meaningful" means making a difference for good in someone's life or in the community that without our effort or money would not have occurred. If we look at our efforts and expenses through that lens, I believe that the good for which our club has come to be known will be multiplied this year and in the future.

In Rotary, most of the real work is done on the club level. I would like each of us to look at ourselves as Rotarians. Are we doing the work? Are we supporting the cause? Are we contributing necessary funds? A few years ago, I personally became somewhat lax in my Rotary participation. I've ramped that up recently, as I've found personal purpose and meaning through what is accomplished with my Rotary affiliation. I hope that each of you has experienced a similar epiphany, or will during this year.

I want to thank the many fine Rotarians who have preceded me in leadership of this club. Also the many, many Rotarians who have tirelessly given their all in service through this club. We will continue our Youth Service and Scholarship programs which are unmatched at any club I know of. And, we will grow areas in which we have not focused in the past - that we may become more balanced in our service.

Meanwhile, let's continue to enjoy our fellowship, have fun at our weekly meetings, and have a great time at several social events over the year. It's fun being a member of La Jolla Rotary.

Meaningfully yours,

Bill Burch, President 2009 - 2010
