Dr. McQuary acquired his elementary and secondary teaching credentials (SF State) and taught in inner city schools (San Francisco), rural schools (Tulare County), and suburban schools (Santa Cruz County). In addition, he was President of this local teachers union, a member of several administrative bargaining teams, and has taught courses at the college level (College of the Sequoias and Fresno Pacific University).
He has been Statewide President of the California Democratic Council (an organization of more than 400 local clubs in 57 California counties), President of Mission Bay Rotary Club (2 terms), member of the Rotary District Leadership Team, Logistics Coordinator for the San Diego Youth Symphony’s International MusiCamp Program (3 years), and a member of Rotary Peace Committee. Currently, Dr. McQuary is a member of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club, Director of Pacific Beach Town Council (5 terms), member of the Pacific Beach Business Improvement District (Discover PB), and steering committee member of the San Diego – Panama Sister City Association.
Dr. McQuary has assisted educational projects supporting students and local schools, such as the Pacific Beach Middle School “Garden to Café” Program, a bullying intervention program, a Peace Pole and a “zone of peace” dedication at the PB Middle School (2014) and Kate Session Elementary School (2015), a Friendship Garden (Balboa Park and Yokohama Partnership) at Crown Point Junior Music Academy (2016), free dictionaries to every third grade student in four Pacific Beach elementary schools and two Clairemont elementary schools (2009-15), annual Crystal Pier Kids Fishing Derby, annual summer Music Concerts on the Green, and Community Organization and School Partnership Agreements with PB Middle School (2014) and all four elementary schools in Pacific Beach (2015).
Most recently, as a 2014 College Board China Bridge Delegate, he traveled to Beijing and the Henan Province (Cradle of Chinese Civilization and the birthplace of Chinese Zen and Kung Fu), where he strengthened sister school partnerships with schools in China and initiated a sister school relationship with the Songshan Shaolin Wushu College, a teacher college for students living near the famous Shaolin Temple. In 2015 and 2016, he returned to China as a delegation member of the Confucius Institute of San Diego State University to visit the Confucius Institute in Beijing and Xiamen University in the southeastern coastal province of Fujian.
Dr. McQuary has two daughters with Master Degrees, who are graduates of UC-Santa Cruz and UC-Santa Barbara; a son who graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, who served in Korea, Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq; and five grandchildren–graduate of CSU-Monterey Bay, student at CSU-Sonoma, two elementary students, and the youngest was born February 2014.
