Mark Hughes – Climate Action Campaign
Mark Hughes graduated from Kansas State University in 1978 with a BS in mechanical engineering. He spent his career in the power generation industry, which includes stints at two investor-owned utilities, Kansas City Power and Light, and The Southern Company. The last fifteen years, prior to his retirement in 2012, were spent at Solar Turbines, here in San Diego. The majority of his years in the industry were spent working on and running coal-fired boilers, but in the late 90’s, the science behind climate change was explained to him and he switched directions, which included the move to Solar Turbines, where he headed up the use of landfill gas and digester gas in their gas turbines. A couple of years ago, he and his wife had solar panels installed on their roof, switched their gas appliances to electricity, and bought two electric cars. Considering that, it’s safe to say his career is one big U-turn.
Mr. Hughes now volunteers for organizations whose goals including moving to a sustainable future.
